কাঠিন্য (Hardness): কোনো ধাতুর উপর অপর কোনো ধাতু দ্বারা আঁচড় কাটতে কিংবা চাপ দিয়ে গর্ত করতে চাইলে গায়ে আঁচড়। লাগা কিংবা গর্ত হওয়ার বিরুদ্ধে পূর্বোক্ত ধাতু যে বাধা প্রদান করে, তাকে এর কাঠিন্য (Hardness)।
